Among the best of the easy righteous deeds that bring a Muslim closer to his Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, is dhikr (remembrance).
Verses and hadiths on the virtue of dhikr and supplication and the encouragement to them
Many verses, and authentic hadiths from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, have come on the virtue of dhikr and supplication and the encouragement to them; we mention what is easy of them.
The Exalted said: "And the remembrance of Allah is greater."
And the Exalted said: "And glorify Him morning and evening."
And the Exalted said: "So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me."
And the Exalted said: "O you who have believed, remember Allah with much remembrance."
And the Exalted said: "And the men who remember Allah often and the women who remember — Allah has prepared for them forgiveness and a great reward."
And the Exalted said: "And remember your Lord much and glorify Him in the evening and the morning."
And the Exalted said: "Those who remember Allah standing, sitting, and on their sides."
And the Exalted said: "And when you have completed your rites, remember Allah as you remember your fathers or with greater remembrance."
And the Exalted said: "O you who have believed, let not your wealth and your children divert you from the remembrance of Allah."
And the Exalted said: And remember your Lord within yourself in humility and in fear without being apparent in speech - in the mornings and the evenings. And do not be among the heedless.
And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The likeness of the one who remembers his Lord and the one who does not remember his Lord is like the living and the dead."
And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Shall I not inform you of the best of your deeds, the purest of them with your Sovereign, the highest of them in your ranks, and better for you than spending gold and silver, and better for you than meeting your enemy so that you strike their necks and they strike your necks?" They said: "Yes." He said: "The dhikr of Allah the Exalted."
And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Allah the Exalted says: I am as My servant thinks of Me, and I am with him when he remembers Me. If he remembers Me within himself, I remember him within Myself; and if he remembers Me in an assembly, I remember him in an assembly better than them. If he draws near to Me by a hand-span, I draw near to him by an arm's length; and if he draws near to Me by an arm's length, I draw near to him by a fathom; and if he comes to Me walking, I come to him running.
And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever sits in a sitting in which he does not remember Allah, there will be a loss upon him from Allah; and whoever lies down in a lying place in which he does not remember Allah, there will be a loss upon him."
And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "No people sit in a gathering in which they do not remember Allah and do not send blessings upon their Prophet, except that it will be a loss upon them; if He wills He will punish them, and if He wills He will forgive them."
And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "No people rise from a gathering in which they did not remember Allah except that they rise from the like of the carcass of a donkey, and it will be a regret for them."
The virtues of dhikr, by Imam Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah
That it repels Satan, subdues him and breaks him.
That it pleases the Most Merciful, the Mighty and Majestic.
That it removes worry and grief from the heart.
That it brings joy, happiness and expansion to the heart.
That it brings provision.
That it clothes the one who remembers with awe, sweetness and radiance.
That it bequeaths him love, which is the spirit of Islam, the pivot of the mill of the religion, and the axis of happiness and salvation. Allah has made a cause for everything, and He made the cause of love the constancy of dhikr. So whoever wishes to attain the love of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, let him be devoted to remembering Him, for it is study and review, just as it is the gateway of knowledge; so dhikr is the gateway of love, its greatest highway and its most upright path.
That it bequeaths him vigilance until it brings him into the gate of excellence, so he worships Allah as if he sees Him. There is no way for one heedless of dhikr to the station of excellence, just as there is no way for one who remains seated to reach the House.
That it bequeaths him turning back to Allah, which is returning to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. Whenever he increases his returning to Him through remembering Him, that bequeaths him returning to Him with his heart in all his states, so Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, remains his refuge in fear, his recourse, his haven, his shelter, the direction of his heart, and his place of flight in times of calamities and trials.
That it bequeaths awe of his Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, and veneration of Him, because of its strong hold over his heart and his presence with Allah the Exalted, unlike the heedless one, for the veil of awe in his heart is thin.
That it bequeaths him Allah the Exalted's remembrance of him, as the Exalted said: ("So remember Me; I will remember you"). Even if there were nothing in dhikr but this alone, it would suffice as a virtue and an honor. And he said, relating from his Lord, Blessed and Exalted: ("Whoever remembers Me within himself, I remember him within Myself; and whoever remembers Me in an assembly, I remember him in an assembly better than them"). Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
That it wipes away sins and removes them, for it is one of the greatest good deeds, and good deeds remove evil deeds.
That it removes the estrangement between the servant and his Lord, Blessed and Exalted, for between the heedless one and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, there is an estrangement that does not vanish except through dhikr.
That when the servant makes himself known to Allah the Exalted by remembering Him in times of ease, He knows him in times of hardship. A report has come whose meaning is that when the obedient servant who remembers Allah the Exalted is afflicted by hardship or asks Allah the Exalted for a need, the angels say: "O Lord, a familiar voice from a familiar servant." And when the heedless one who turns away from Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, calls upon Him and asks Him, the angels say: "O Lord, an unfamiliar voice from an unfamiliar servant." – And the hadith of Ibn Abbas: "Know Allah in times of ease, and He will know you in times of hardship." – Narrated by Imam Ahmad.
That it saves from the punishment of Allah the Exalted, as Mu'adh, may Allah be pleased with him, said, and it is narrated as a raised report: ("The son of Adam did no deed that saves more from the punishment of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, than the remembrance of Allah the Exalted"). Narrated by Ahmad, Malik, Ibn Majah and al-Tirmidhi.
That it is a cause for the descent of tranquility, the covering of mercy, and the surrounding of the one who remembers by the angels, as the Prophet ﷺ informed. – The hadith: ("No people sit remembering Allah except that the angels surround them, mercy covers them, tranquility descends upon them, and Allah mentions them among those who are with Him"). Narrated by Muslim.
That it is a cause for the tongue being occupied away from backbiting, slander, lying, obscenity and falsehood. For the servant must speak; if he does not speak with the remembrance of Allah the Exalted and the mention of His commands, he speaks with these prohibited things or some of them, and there is no way to be safe from them at all except by the remembrance of Allah the Exalted, and observation and experience bear witness to this. Whoever accustoms his tongue to the remembrance of Allah protects his tongue from falsehood and idle talk, and whoever's tongue dries up from the remembrance of Allah the Exalted becomes moist with every falsehood, idle talk and obscenity, and there is no might and no power except with Allah.
That it secures the servant from regret on the Day of Resurrection, for every gathering in which the servant does not remember his Lord the Exalted will be a regret and a loss for him on the Day of Resurrection.
That it is the easiest of acts of worship, while being among the most majestic and most excellent of them, for the movement of the tongue is the lightest and easiest of the movements of the limbs. Were any organ of a person to move in a day and a night as much as his tongue moves, it would be extremely hard on him; indeed, he would not be able to. And in the hadith: ("Two words, light on the tongue, heavy on the Scale, beloved to the Most Merciful: Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him; Glory be to Allah the Magnificent").
That it is the planting of Paradise. In al-Tirmidhi, from the hadith of Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir, from the Prophet, he said: ("Whoever says: Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him, a palm tree is planted for him in Paradise"). Al-Tirmidhi said: a good, authentic hadith; and al-Albani graded it authentic in Sahih al-Jami' – 6429.
That the gift and the virtue that are attached to it are not attached to other deeds. In the two Sahihs, from Abu Hurayra, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah said: ("Whoever says: There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner; His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He is over all things capable, a hundred times in a day, it will be for him equal to freeing ten slaves, a hundred good deeds will be written for him, a hundred evil deeds will be erased from him, and it will be a protection for him from Satan on that day until evening; and no one will have brought anything better than what he brought, except a man who did more than that. And whoever says: Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him a hundred times in a day, his sins will be removed even if they were like the foam of the sea"). And in Sahih Muslim, from Abu Hurayra, he said: the Messenger of Allah said: ("For me to say: Glory be to Allah, praise be to Allah, there is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest, is more beloved to me than that upon which the sun has risen").
That constant remembrance of the Lord, Blessed and Exalted, brings security from forgetting Him, which is the cause of the servant's misery in his life and in his return, for forgetting the Lord, Glorified and Exalted, brings forgetting oneself and one's own interests. The Exalted said: And be not like those who forgot Allāh, so He made them forget themselves. Those are the defiantly disobedient. And when the servant forgets himself, he turns away from his interests, forgets them and is occupied away from them, so they perish and become corrupt, inevitably. So whoever forgets Allah the Exalted, He makes him forget himself in this world and forgets him in the punishment on the Day of Resurrection. The Exalted said: And whoever turns away from My remembrance - indeed, he will have a depressed [i.e., difficult] life, and We will gather [i.e., raise] him on the Day of Resurrection blind." He will say, "My Lord, why have you raised me blind while I was [once] seeing?" [Allāh] will say, "Thus did Our signs come to you, and you forgot [i.e., disregarded] them; and thus will you this Day be forgotten." that is, you will be forgotten in the punishment, as you forgot My signs, did not remember them and did not act upon them.
That dhikr is a light for the one who remembers in this world, a light for him in his grave, and a light for him in his return, running before him on the Bridge. Hearts and graves are not illuminated by anything like the remembrance of Allah the Exalted. Allah the Exalted said: ("Is one who was dead and We gave him life and made for him a light by which he walks among the people like one who is in darkness, from which he will not emerge?"). The first is the believer, illuminated by faith in Allah, love of Him, knowledge of Him and remembrance of Him; and the other is the one heedless of Allah the Exalted, who turns away from remembering Him and loving Him. The whole matter and all success lie in the light, and all misery lies in missing it.
That dhikr gathers what is scattered, scatters what is gathered, brings the distant near and makes the near distant.
That in the heart there is a hardness that nothing melts except the remembrance of Allah the Exalted, so the servant should treat the hardness of his heart with the remembrance of Allah the Exalted. Hammad ibn Zayd mentioned, from al-Mu'alla ibn Ziyad, that a man said to al-Hasan: "O Abu Sa'id, I complain to you of the hardness of my heart." He said: "Melt it with dhikr." This is because the more heedlessness intensifies in the heart, the more its hardness intensifies; so when Allah the Exalted is remembered, that hardness melts, as lead melts in fire. And when the hardness of hearts has been melted by the like of the remembrance of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.
That dhikr brings the blessings of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and of His angels upon the one who remembers, and whoever Allah the Exalted and His angels bless has attained all success and achieved every triumph. Glorified and Exalted is He said: O you who have believed, remember Allāh with much remembrance And exalt Him morning and afternoon. It is He who confers blessing upon you,[1204] and His angels [ask Him to do so] that He may bring you out from darknesses into the light. And ever is He, to the believers, Merciful.
That the gatherings of dhikr are the gatherings of the angels. They have no gathering among the gatherings of this world except a gathering in which Allah the Exalted is remembered, as they both narrated in the two Sahihs from the hadith of al-A'mash, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurayra; the Messenger of Allah said: ("Allah has angels who roam the roads, in addition to the recorders of people, seeking the people of dhikr. When they find people remembering Allah the Exalted, they call to one another: 'Come to what you need.' He said: Then they surround them with their wings up to the nearest heaven. Then their Lord, the Exalted, asks them, though He knows best about them: 'What are My servants saying?' He said: They say: 'They glorify You, they magnify You and they praise You.' He said: He says: 'Have they seen Me?' He said: They say: 'No, by Allah, they have not seen You.' He said: He says: 'How would it be if they had seen Me?' He said: They say: 'If they had seen You, they would be more intense in worshipping You, more intense in praising and glorifying You, and more abundant in glorifying You.' He said: He says: 'What do they ask of Me?' He said: They say: 'They ask You for Paradise.' He said: He says: 'Have they seen it?' He said: They say: 'No, by Allah, O Lord, they have not seen it.' He said: He says: 'How would it be if they had seen it?' He said: They say: 'If they had seen it, they would be more eager for it, more intense in seeking it, and greater in desire for it.' He says: 'From what do they seek refuge?' He said: They say: 'From the Fire.' He said: He says: 'Have they seen it?' He said: They say: 'No, by Allah, O Lord, they have not seen it.' He said: He says: 'How would it be if they had seen it?' He said: They say: 'If they had seen it, they would flee from it more intensely and fear it more.' He said: He says: 'I make you witnesses that I have forgiven them.' One of the angels says: 'Among them is so-and-so, who is not of them; he came only for a need.' He said: 'They are the companions in sitting; their companion will not be wretched.'") This is of their blessing upon themselves and upon their companion; they have a share of His saying ("and He has made me blessed wherever I am"). So the believer is blessed wherever he alights, and the wicked one is ill-omened wherever he alights. The gatherings of dhikr are the gatherings of the angels, and the gatherings of heedlessness are the gatherings of the devils, and everything is attributed to its like and its kind, and each person goes to what suits him.
That Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, boasts of those who remember Him to His angels, as Muslim narrated in his Sahih from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, who said: Mu'awiya came out to a circle in the mosque and said: "What has made you sit?" They said: "We sat to remember Allah the Exalted." He said: "By Allah, nothing made you sit but that?" They said: "By Allah, nothing made us sit but that." He said: "I did not ask you to swear out of suspicion of you, and no one of my standing with the Messenger of Allah narrated fewer hadiths from him than I. The Messenger of Allah came out to a circle of his companions and said: ('What has made you sit?' They said: 'We sat to remember Allah the Exalted and to praise Him for having guided us to Islam and bestowed His favor upon us through you.' He said: 'By Allah, nothing made you sit but that?' They said: 'By Allah, nothing made us sit but that.' He said: 'I did not ask you to swear out of suspicion of you, but Gabriel came to me and informed me that Allah, Blessed and Exalted, boasts of you to the angels')." This boasting from the Lord, Blessed and Exalted, is evidence of the honor of dhikr with Him, His love for it, and that it has a distinction over other deeds.
That all deeds were only legislated to establish the remembrance of Allah the Exalted, and the aim of them is to attain the remembrance of Allah the Exalted. Glorified and Exalted is He said: ("Establish prayer for My remembrance").
That the remembrance of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, makes the difficult easy, makes the hard simple, and lightens hardships. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, is not remembered over anything difficult but it becomes easy, nor over anything hard but it becomes simple, nor over any hardship but it lightens, nor over any distress but it vanishes, nor over any affliction but it is relieved. So the remembrance of Allah the Exalted is relief after hardship, ease after difficulty, and relief after grief and worry. This is made clear by:
That abundant remembrance of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, is security from hypocrisy, for the hypocrites rarely remember Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said of the hypocrites: ("and they do not remember Allah except a little"), and Ka'b said: "Whoever increases his remembrance of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, is free of hypocrisy." And for this reason, and Allah knows best, Allah the Exalted concluded Surat al-Munafiqun with His saying, the Exalted: O you who have believed, let not your wealth and your children divert you from the remembrance of Allāh. And whoever does that - then those are the losers. for in that is a warning against the trial of the hypocrites, who were heedless of the remembrance of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and so fell into hypocrisy.
[1204] i.e., Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) cares for you and covers you with His mercy. An additional meaning is that He praises you in the presence of the angels.
